new law: manga artists are not allowed to draw black characters until they look at black person in real life so they can realize we don’t look like circus clowns

(manga artist voice) hey yall check out my new and probably my only black oc

Exhibit A

Fate/Grand Order literally put this nigga in blackface for no damn reason and their artists stay drawing all other darkskinned characters exactly as described above and I’m just💀💀💀

Not a fan of the design myself, but black-japanese dudes don’t have very much representation from what I’ve seen… but that doesn’t make it right to just throw a dark-skinned japanese guy into blackface because you have literally have one or two other black dudes in the game 🙃🙃🙃

Edit: basically agreeing with all of the above

Can anybody explain what is the problem here? I’m Japanese living in jpn and not very familiar with recent color-related issues in subculture…I really would like to know because I really like Emiya Alter (I’m pretty sure other Japanese fans would like to know)

im glad you asked

mangakas do a horrendous job of putting black representation in their works because they base their research off of stereotypes instead of our culture and history. lets start with visuals

mangakas like to give their black characters big lips and afros  (and yes the lady with the afro was addicted to watermelon thats from cowboy bepbop) some of these characters look EXACTLY like racist caricatures from minstrel shows

and then there’s ganguro which is when japanese girls tan themselves to hell to counter light skin beauty standards (which are also racist because it’s blackface)

anime and manga creators should not make black characters if they’re going to make them off of stereotypes. not only is it incredibly racist, but it doesn’t give us good representation. the world already presents us as dark skinned animals with big lips that are loud and mean and eat fried chicken and to combat that there needs to be good representation in media that shows as who we really are, people will beautiful cultures and a history that still haunts us. and to answer your question, there’s no point in having a character whose not even black have dark skin. it’s not a funny joke or gag. here are some examples of good designs of black characters

the ppl in the notes said some good things also reading this is helpful
